Since I'm on Yakushima, I want to go trekking to the Jomon and Yakusugi cedars!
But a day hike seems like a tough one... Maybe a two-day trip with one night's stay would be better, since the walking distance would roughly be half as long?
But what are the mountain huts and toilets like? There are so many things I don't know. (^_^;)

To help those who are new to mountain accommodation feel at ease, I've compiled a list of questions and concerns I've received from my guests, such as, "What do other people do?"

Are you prepared with your mountain climbing gear and belongings?

Please double-check your hiking boots, backpack, and rainwear!
When climbing Jomon Sugi, as you might expect, the equipment and belongings you bring will differ and even increase depending on whether you're doing a day trip or an overnight stay, so you'll need to be well-prepared.
The following explains what equipment and luggage you should bring, so please take a look for reference (＾∀＾).

How far (km) is it to Jomon Sugi (Yakusugi)?

The one-way trip is 11km, consisting of 8.5km of trolley track (about 3 hours) and 2.5km of mountain path (about 2 hours).
That's 22km round trip (*_*).

I'll cover this distance (22km) and return in two days.

That's right, my wife often says, "Whether it's a day trip or an overnight stay, wearing thick, mountaineering socks makes a big difference in how tired you feel the next day!" When I take my kids Mountain climbing, shoes are important, but we also make sure they wear Mountain climbing or thick socks.

Many people don't feel that tired when climbing, but when descending, or when the descent continues, the weight of your body and the luggage you're carrying really hits your hips and legs. The strain is actually enormous.

It's also useful to have a trekking pole.
Prepare yourself for various equipment and belongings, and prepare yourself mentally to not give up! Let's head for Jomon Sugi ٩( 'ω' )و!

How to get to the Arakawa trailhead (About the mountain bus and preparing tickets in advance)

How to get from Yakusugi Nature Museum to the Arakawa Trailhead (Buy your bus ticket the day before!)

The Arakawa trailhead, the starting point of the Jomon Sugi trek, is closed to private vehicles from March to November each year, so you cannot reach the trailhead by private car or rental car.

You can get there by shuttle bus or taxi from the Yakusugi Nature Museum.
If you're taking the shuttle bus, it's recommended that you purchase your bus ticket the day before. .
(You can also purchase tickets at the bus shelter on the day, but there will be long lines if it's busy, and they only accept cash.^^;)

What is the Arakawa Trailhead like? What's there?

The Arakawa Trailhead is the gateway to starting your Jomon Cedar trek.

The Arakawa trailhead is located at an altitude of approximately 600m, approximately 35 minutes by shuttle bus from the bus stop in the Yakusugi Nature Museum bus parking lot.

By the way, the only way to get to the Arakawa trailhead is by shuttle bus or taxi. (From March 1st to November 30th.)

There is a waiting area (with two small changing rooms)

When you arrive at the Arakawa trailhead, there will be a waiting room right in front of you. If it rains, you can eat your breakfast or put on your rain gear.
*There are two small changing rooms inside the waiting room (on the left side as you face the trailhead).

However, since it often gets crowded, it may be a good idea to put on your rain gear in advance if the weather looks bad.

Restrooms available / No trash cans or vending machines

By the way, guests often ask, but please note that there are no garbage dumps or vending machines!

Also, there are restrooms in the building next to the waiting area (women's restrooms are on the left as you face the front, and men's restrooms are on the right), so be sure to use them before you leave!

During peak season, the restrooms here can get very crowded quickly, so be sure to time your visit accordingly and go early.

*By the way, there is a "used portable toilet collection box" located between the waiting room and the women's restroom. Please dispose of your used portable toilet here on your way out.

About mountaineering registration

If you are joining a guided tour, you do not need to submit a mountain climbing report. However, if you are climbing without a guide, you must submit one.

Submitting a mountain climbing report is extremely important, as it will facilitate a smooth search in the event of an accident or getting lost.

For guided tours, mountain climbing reports are not required, as guides communicate with each other and use walkie-talkies.

Toilet situation in the mountains of Yakushima

When planning a hike, one thing you can't ignore is the toilet situation in the mountains.

So, be sure to know the locations of existing toilets, portable toilet booths, and used portable toilet collection boxes (there were some at the Arakawa trailhead!).

Please do not throw away garbage, sanitary products, leftover food, or food waste!

Also, please do not throw away used portable toilets and their contents here, even though they are heavy, but be sure to take them home with you!!
(You can often see them discarded around the toilets at Takatsuka Hut.)
*Also, please be careful, as some people drop their cell phones in the toilet.

At night, it's pitch black, just like the hut, so you'll need a headlamp or other lighting device.
It's a good idea to check the location while it's still light.

Portable toilets are available for purchase at mountaineering equipment stores, tourist information centers, souvenir shops, and accommodations.

They come in packs of one or two. The two-pack is a better deal, but if you have any left over, we can't offer a refund, so if you don't use them, please keep them as a memento of your trip or for emergencies. (^^)/.
(Some places only sell packs of two.)

*And after using the toilet, be sure to take any tissues or toilet paper you use with you!

How many portable toilets do you need?

This question is often asked.

This question is difficult to answer because it depends on the climber's physical condition and how often they need to use the restroom. However, I will answer based on the assumption that it applies to someone in average physical condition who is trekking. (;^ω^)

It depends on the season, but if you expect the existing toilets to be crowded, it might be a good idea to bring two, and if it's not a busy season, it might be a good idea to bring one as a safeguard.

*Please note that existing toilets may be unavailable due to power outages or other malfunctions. If you are concerned, please check with the tourist association or other relevant organizations beforehand.

How to transport human waste from mountain toilets

When human waste accumulates in the pit toilets at the Takatsuka and Shin-Takatsuka Hut, people regularly pump it out and manually lower it onto the trolley track.

For the sake of these people and the next person who uses the restroom, please keep it as clean as possible and strictly follow the rules!

By the way, I once had to carry human waste, and it was incredibly heavy!

Each container weighs about 20 kg, and each person carries two.

Over 40kg in total! Wow!!

You'll want to show your respect for the workers who brave the risk of injury.

If you see workers carrying human waste, please give them the right of way, regardless of whether they are climbing or descending.

Thank you in advance.

The human waste is unloaded onto the trolley track and loaded onto the trolley.

If you're lucky, you might even be able to see this trolley!

Just be careful not to get in the way of the work.

Can I use my cell phone (smartphone/iPhone) in the mountains? (Arakawa trailhead round trip route)

Please note that while the signal is reasonably strong at the location shown in the photo below, it generally does not connect in other locations.

Also, it is said that docomo (Docomo) has the best signal reception on Yakushima.
*Signal reception varies depending on the media you use.

Now, let me introduce three spots where you can get a good cell phone signal.
・Arakawa Trailhead
・Jomon Sugi Deck
・Takatsuka Hut Deck

The signal is relatively strong at the Arakawa trailhead, but it's barely noticeable at the Jomon Sugi Deck and the deck in front of the Takatsuka Hut.

By the way, the Arakawa trailhead became available in June 2016, and we guides were delighted with how convenient it became.

Uninhabited huts on the Jomon Sugi course (Takatsuka Hut, Shin-Takatsuka Hut) / Tent camping

There is no mountain hut manager and no reservations are accepted, but you can use the huts for free.

Unlike typical mountain huts where meals and bedding are provided, all mountain huts on Yakushima are unmanned shelters.

And the huts are available on a first come, first served basis.

So, if the hut is already full, you'll have to camp in a tent.
*In other words, if you don't have a tent, you'll need to go to the hut early to secure a spot.

In principle, camping outside of the tent spaces around unmanned huts is prohibited except in emergencies. Please plan your hike with some leeway. (^^)

Takatsuka Hut (Lemon Gas Hut)

It was rebuilt in 2013 with a personal donation from Shintaro Akazu, president of Lemon Gas Kagoshima.

The inside of the hut is made of glass-coated cardboard tubes filled with silicone, so it's quite warm.

Structure: Glass-coated cardboard tube, Capacity: 20 people, Elevation: 1,330m
Water is available near the Jomon Sugi, about 10 minutes from the hut.
One pit toilet, one portable toilet tent, and a tent deck are available.

Also available are lodgings for those hiking (over Miyanoura-dake) and those coming via Shiratani Unsuikyo.

It's located about 10 minutes from Jomon Sugi, so it's recommended for viewing the Jomon Sugi lit up in the morning sun the next morning.

The hut has a limited capacity, so if you're not confident you can make it to Takatsuka Hut early, please bring a tent.

Shintakatsuka Hut

An abandoned cabin built in 1992.

Structure: Wooden, Capacity: 40, Altitude: 1,460m
Water source is located close to the hut, one pit toilet, two TSS toilets, two portable toilet booths, and a tent deck.

This is the most popular refuge hut on the popular Yakushima traverse route, which starts at the Yodogawa trailhead, crosses Miyanouradake, and leads to Jomon Sugi and Shiratani Unsuikyo.

If you are camping in a tent

There is some space to pitch a tent around the Takatsuka Hut and ShinTakatsuka Hut.
*When we say space, we mean just a leveled area.

Space is limited, so during peak season, arrive before dark.

However, as mentioned above, if you are taking the round-trip route from the Arakawa trailhead, it is common to stay at the Takatsuka hut or the surrounding tent site.

In the first place, there aren't many hikers who stay overnight on the Arakawa trailhead round trip route, other than those on guided tours... (。-∀-)

Things to keep in mind when staying overnight in the mountains

Don't worry, there are no bears or wild boars on Yakushima!

Recently, there have been daily reports of bears in northeastern Japan. It's very frightening.
Don't worry, Yakushima is home to monkeys and deer instead.

Protect your food from Himenezumi(Small Mouse)!

Himenezumi(Small Mouse) are likely to appear inside the hut, so be sure to store food and trash in your backpack or hang them up while you sleep.

However, I've seen people occasionally eat the entire backpack along with the food inside, so I recommend hanging it on a string instead (^^)/.

My wife had some fish sausage in the side pocket of her backpack, but the whole pocket got ripped open ( ;∀;).

If you're camping in a tent, you'll generally be fine as long as you keep your food and trash inside the tent.

Please be careful not to leave it outside as it will become prey to mice.

Double check the locations of water sources and toilets before it gets dark!
~It's easy to get there, but it's hard to get lost on the way back~

It's easy to get lost during daylight hours, but please be especially careful during the pitch black hours of late night and early morning. Apparently, there are occasional people who say, "It's right there, so it's fine!" but then fail to return even after 15 minutes.

Especially when you go to the toilet in the middle of the night, you're half asleep and half conscious. And since you're relying only on the light from your headlamp, it's surprising how many people make it to the toilet but then lose track of the way back.

Make sure to check your location during daylight hours or when you're alert!

When you leave, be sure to take your trash and anything you brought with you!

Please be sure to take your trash with you!

Perhaps out of kindness, some people leave leftover gas cans, drinks, food, etc.

I guess they're there with the intention that people should feel free to eat or use them...

I wonder when it was left there, and if it was someone's drink... I'm too scared to touch it...

It will end up in the trash, so please don't do it!

Can I retire during the trekking tour?

First of all, the Jomon Sugi course is quite challenging for beginners and those who are not confident in their physical strength.

The first half is mostly a trolley road, but frankly, it's a very long journey, and after that there's a substantial mountain path.

Not a few people quit midway through.

If you are participating in a tour and experience discomfort in your body or knees, please consult your guide first without making any self-diagnosis.

If you remain silent out of concern for causing trouble to other participants or those around you, it could lead to serious problems later. ?
*Taking action as soon as possible is the best way to mitigate the problem.

What can you do to avoid giving up mountaineering?

The key is to start practicing walking and climbing early on the day you decide you want to see the Jomon Sugi.

If you're busy with work, housework, and childcare and can't find time to get fit, try walking for at least 30 minutes a day, consciously taking the stairs, etc. Try to do as much training as you can every day!

If you consciously use stairs, you will build up the leg strength needed for mountain climbing.

To prevent injuries, it is very important to train your walking and climbing muscles, endurance, and physical sense.
※Personally, I think people who say things like, "I used to be very active" or "I used to climb mountains" are the most likely to retire (lol).

If you exercise regularly, this course isn't too scary.

Since you've come all the way to Yakushima, don't give up, go see the Jomon Sugi, and return home safely! (^^)/!

Tobacco in the Mountains

The Jomon Sugi trekking trail is very popular and bustles with tourists.

Meanwhile, the Yakushima Tourism Association received complaints such as, "I came here to enjoy nature, but the smell of cigarettes is disappointing," so the countermeasure council decided on a no-smoking rule.

By May 26, 2012, the Yakushima Mountain Area Utilization Measures Council, comprised of the Ministry of the Environment, Kagoshima Prefecture, and other organizations, established a voluntary rule banning smoking on hiking trails to the Jomon Sugi on Yakushima Island (Yakushima Town, Kagoshima Prefecture), a World Heritage Site. At the same time, smoking areas were also established.

There are four smoking areas (no signs) between the Arakawa trailhead and Jomon Sugi.

※If you smoke, please bring a portable ashtray and be considerate of others.

・Behind the men's restroom at the Arakawa trailhead
・The back of the Kosugidani rest house near the former Kosugidani settlement
・Next to the restroom at the end of the trolley road
・Around the Takatsuka Hut

Of course, please never smoke near bio-toilets, Jomon Sugi, or Wilson Stump.

Among them, the Reiwa Girls (I named them myself...lol) made a particularly strong impression on me. We'd like to introduce their overnight Jomon Cedar camping tour (round trip route around the Arakawa River).

The participants were three close female friends in their 30s. They actually met while traveling solo in South America and joined us on this "Shima Asobi Tour"! (^^)!
Of course, we came from all different workplaces, ages, and hometowns.

Furthermore, since the tour took place on May 1, 2019 (the year the Reiwa era began), all three of us wore T-shirts with "Reiwa" (the Japanese for "Reiwa") on them (lol).
The reactions of the people we passed by were quite amusing (lol).

Observe the trolleys on the Jomon Sugi camping tour!

We were lucky from the start!

On this tour, we were able to observe the trolleys in action by chance.
(Not always possible)
*Trolleys still in use are rare across the country, and are mainly used on present-day Yakushima.

In the past, trolleys were mainly used to transport felled timber.

A light rain creates a fantastic Jomon Sugi

On the first day of the tour, there was occasional light rain, which moistened the entire forest and created a truly magical landscape.
We all chatted about various things during the tour, and before we knew it, we had reached the Jomon Sugi.

We had a blast talking about these topics during the tour.

The energetic group members were constantly chatting, but after arriving at Jomon Sugi, they quietly gazed at the towering old tree before them.

At night, we slept at a tent site near Takatsuka Hut (uninhabited).

This time, Takatsuka Hut, located about 10 minutes up from Jomon Sugi, was full, so three of us shared a four-person tent.

We had a warm meal here and prepared for the descent the next day.
One of the group members brought some cards, and we all played together for about an hour (^ω^).

After breakfast, head to the private Jomon Sugi!

The weather forecast was correct on the second day of the tour, and we had beautiful sunny skies!
After a hearty, warm breakfast, we headed to Jomon Sugi for the second time.
We all took a commemorative photo together (^^♪

The Jomon Sugi view in the early morning is something you can only experience by staying overnight ( *´艸｀)

A wonderful detour that you can't do on a day trip♪

The route down is basically the same, but rather than just going straight down, we may make various detours depending on the weather, time, and the guests' stamina. (*´з`)
One ​​reason is that the extra time you have is significantly different from a day tour.
Another reason we recommend the Jomon Sugi overnight camping tour!

Day tours to Jomon Sugi tend to leave early in the morning, see the Jomon Sugi, and then rush back because they don't have enough time.

Especially in the summer, guests who join river and sea tours often ask me, "Are there any hot springs I can use after checkout, or places where I can take a day trip to enjoy a hot spring? I'm going back on the afternoon (evening) flight!" (^_^;)
I understand how you feel! However, the hot spring situation on Yakushima is changing almost every year. In fact, some facilities have stopped offering day trips since the COVID-19 pandemic passed.
So, this time, I'd like to introduce "Yakushima's recommended hot springs, day trip facilities, and hot spring inns."

"Yuamigi(bathing clothes)" are convenient for outdoor hot springs on Yakushima.

Also, Yakushima has its own unique hot spring situation. .
Outdoor hot springs are incredibly relaxing, but having a yuamigi(bathing clothes) makes it even more enjoyable!
If you can afford it, I highly recommend it (^^)
However, disposing of wet yuamigi(bathing clothes) while traveling can be a hassle, so there are disposable "yuamigi(bathing clothes)" available, so please look around for them.

Local people make their own or buy them (my wife made her own too 🎵).
I make mine myself. Men's "yuamigi(bathing clothes)I bought this. It's very useful because I can use it at the beach or river when I need to change clothes (＾∀＾).

Day-trip hot springs

Yunokonoyu ~Miyanoura~

Yunoko no Yu is located at the back of the parking lot of the Comprehensive Nature Park, midway along the Shiratani Line.

Originally, it was renovated in 2009 using a hot spring facility in the Yunoko area, long beloved as a therapeutic hot spring resort. It now requires a reservation (30 minutes) for full use. The bathtub is tiled and features a Goemon-style bath. There are two bathrooms, so we recommend calling ahead to make a reservation!

In particular, in the evenings, it is often used by locals and those descending from Shiratani Unsuikyo Gorge, so reservations can be difficult to get. The water is replaced every time and heated over firewood for 30 minutes, making it a truly luxurious hot spring, even though it's not visible from the outside.

This is a traditional hot spring that has been loved by locals for a long time.
The Yunokawa River flows right next to the hot spring, and you can enjoy the sound of the river while relaxing in the water. Towels, shampoo, etc. are not provided, so please be sure to bring your own.
The water is a simple sulfur spring, not slimy and refreshing. Because it is a cold spring, it is heated in a boiler. Therefore, please refrain from leaving the water running. m(__)m.

Manten Onsen is the hot spring facility of Hotel Jomon no Yado Manten, located very close to the airport.
With an indoor bath, an open-air bath, a cypress open-air bath, and a sauna, it's a great place to relax and soak without worrying about time (*^^*). The water is alkaline and simple, exfoliating for skin-beautifying benefits.
Amenities include a towel set and shampoo and conditioner, so you can enter empty-handed. Bathing hours are from 3:00 PM to 10:00 PM, so after enjoying activities in the mountains or rivers, you can relax and soothe your fatigue in Manten Onsen.

Onoaida Onsen ~Onoaida~

This hot spring, beloved by locals, features free-flowing spring water bubbling up from the rocks at your feet. The water is 49 degrees! Locals who bathe every day are used to it and enjoy it without any problems, but first-time visitors should be prepared for a challenge (lol). Even I, when I bathe for the first time in a while, prepare myself before soaking (^^).
The water is a simple sulfur spring, warming you from the inside out. The trailhead for Janokuchi-Falls is located right next to it, and people often come here to soothe their tiredness after trekking down the mountain.

Yakushima Onsen [samana hotel Yakushima] ~ Onoaida ~

Yakushima Onsen is a hot spring facility at Samana Hotel Yakushima (formerly JR Hotel Yakushima), located on the coast of Onoaida.
The water is a slightly viscous alkaline simple hot spring with a variety of health benefits. There is also an open-air bath, so you can soak in the hot spring while gazing at the ocean, relieving the fatigue of everyday life and the mountains.
A towel set and shampoo and conditioner are provided, so it's a great place to stop by during a drive (*^^*).

Outdoor hot spring where you can take a day trip

The wild atmosphere is brimming with nature, and bathing in a hot spring while watching the sunset and starry sky is the best!
It's convenient to bring a bathing suit when using an outdoor hot spring, so please feel free to check it out (^ω^).
We also have disposable "yuamigi(bathing clothes)" and Men's "yuamigi(bathing clothes).

Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen (Underwater Hot Spring) ~Hirauchi~

This rare hot spring springs from the sea, and at high tide it's underwater. It's a rare hot spring that can only be enjoyed two hours before and after low tide. I often visit when I'm driving or have business south. (*^^*)
The source water temperature is about 46 degrees, and as the tide goes out, it slowly changes from seawater to hot spring water.

The water quality is excellent, and you can choose between warm and hot water! And best of all, the ocean is right there, so the view is amazing. At night, if the weather is nice, you can enjoy a relaxing soak while gazing at the starry sky. Swimsuits are not allowed, but bathing suits and towels are OK. However, there is no changing room, so you'll need to hide in the shade of a rock while undressing. Please place your clothes and towels on the rocks where they won't get wet. It is considered good etiquette to pour hot water over yourself before entering.

Yudomari Onsen ~ Yudomari ~

Yudomari Onsen was renovated and reopened in March 2023! Previously, there was only a separate bath for men and women, but now with the addition of a roof and enclosure, you can enjoy a relaxing soak even on rainy days.

The pillar in the middle wrapped in black cloth separates the men and women. The ocean side is open, so you can still bathe while looking out at the ocean, just like before (*^^*). The water is alkaline, a simple hot spring that springs from the source on the beach. It's low at about 38 degrees, so you can enjoy a long, relaxing bath. (Please refrain from bathing in the cold winter months (^_^;)). Swimsuits are not permitted, but towels and bathing suits are OK.

Public baths where you can take a day trip

Ōuranoyu has been closed.　~Isso~

It's very unfortunate, but this public bath will be closing from 2025. I'm sure there are various reasons for this, but I've heard that the main impact is due to population decline and depopulation. There's a campsite next door where you can take a bath, which was very convenient, so it's a shame (;;).

Also, the Green Hotel Yakushima has closed its public baths to visitors since June 2023. (Only hotel guests are allowed to use the baths.) That's because of the COVID-19 pandemic. (^_^;)

Recommended hot spring inns

Jomon no Yado "Manten" ~ Koseda ~

Manten is a natural hot spring inn located just a one-minute walk from the airport. Miyanoura and Anbo are also about a 15-minute drive away. There are drugstores and discount shops nearby, making it very convenient for purchasing travel essentials.

The entire hotel was renovated in 2015, making it even more comfortable.
As mentioned in reviews, the staff are incredibly friendly, so if you're worried about the weather or have any questions about your travels, it's a great place to ask for help. (*^^*)

The hotel has an elevator, fully accessible rooms, aromatherapy massages, and rooms with natural hot springs, so you might as well spend a relaxing time here.

Iwasaki Hotel stands majestically with Mt. Mochomu in Onoaida in the background.
The expansive grounds include a strollable garden, filled with bird songs, tangerine orchards, apple camellias, and other plants, making it a perfect place for a morning stroll. The large communal bath features an indoor bath, an open-air bath, and a sauna, allowing you to enjoy the hot springs while taking in the views. The sulfur spring water is effective for fatigue recovery, muscle pain, neuralgia, and gynecological disorders.

It also boasts the only heated pool on Yakushima (with swimsuit rentals), making it a great place to swim on rainy days. (^^) Hiking boots, rainwear, and walking sticks are also available for rental at the shop, so please make a reservation in advance if you need them. Numbers are limited.
This hotel is the perfect place to relax in the hot springs after a trek.

This inn is also popular with international visitors. Reservations are required for dinner, but you can also order a boxed lunch.
There's a supermarket about 1.5 km away, so you can buy dinner there and eat it on the deck of your cottage.

TIDA Resort Yakushima -Yudomari-

TIDA is a group of four cottages located in the Yudomari district of Yakushima, a place with a mild climate. Apparently, the name means "sun" in Okinawan. Each cottage is two-story and equipped with a kitchen and a Goemon bath. Various plans are available, including bed-only and meals-included options, so you can choose the plan that best suits you and relax. However, since it's in the southern part of the island, transportation isn't particularly convenient, so we recommend renting a car!
The restaurant was renovated in 2023 and is now a wonderful space with a panoramic view of the ocean. The food, prepared by a professional chef, is exquisite, so be sure to give it a try! (*^^*)

Depending on the time of day, there may only be one train per hour. For a smoother trip, I personally recommend renting a car.

Also, please note that during peak seasons, reservations for not only rental cars but also accommodations and guided tours are often unavailable.

Planning a trip can be a pain, researching itineraries, booking guided tours and accommodations, etc. (;^ω^).

So, I've put together some recommended guesthouses, cottages and hotels based on what I've heard from my guests and researched.

Please use this as a reference for your travels.

When traveling to Yakushima, we recommend renting a car if you want to participate in activities and sightsee at your own pace.

However, during busy periods like Golden Week and summer, rental cars are often full, and we often hear stories of people not being able to rent one. So, make sure to make your reservation and prepare early to enjoy Yakushima to the fullest! (*^^*)

Here is a list of recommended accommodations in the southern part of Yakushima!

Is it really convenient to stay in the Anbo region if you're mainly Mountain climbing Jomon Cedar, Mt. Miyanoura, Mt.Kuromi, Mt.Tacchu, Yakusugi Land, etc.?

From the Yakusugi Nature Museum bus stop in the hills of the Anbo district, it takes about 35 minutes by shuttle bus up the mountain path to the Arakawa Trailhead (the trailhead for the Jomon Cedar trek).

If you're planning on climbing Jomon Sugi, you'll need to catch a bus from around 5:00 AM to 6:00 AM. So, it's best to get as much sleep as possible beforehand, which will help your overall health during the trek.

"I want to take a bath as soon as possible after coming down the mountain!" (Repeat visitor)

Also, from the town of Anbo, the Yakusugi Land trailhead (also the trailhead for Mt. Tacchu) is about a 30-minute bus or car ride up the mountain path, and the Yodogawa trailhead (the trailhead for Mt. Kuromi and Mt. Miyanoura) is about a 60-minute drive up the mountain path.

A phrase often uttered by first-time visitors to Yakushima...

"I never thought the island would be this big (;´Д｀)".

Yakushima is an island with a circumference of approximately 132 kilometers, and is said to have an area roughly equivalent to that of Tokyo's 23 wards.

So, for example, if you plan to climb Jomon Sugi the next day and stay at a lodging in the Miyanoura area, you'll lose about 30 minutes each way...

The one-way trip from Miyanoura to Anbo (Yakusugi Nature Museum: where the local bus departs) takes about 30 minutes, and the round-trip travel time is an additional hour.

If you're staying at a lodging in Anbo, the Yakusugi Nature Museum is about a 5-10 minute one-way trip away.

So, if you're planning on trekking to the Jomon Cedar or climbing Mount Miyanoura, staying in Anbo offers the most time flexibility.

If you're planning on visiting Shiratani Unsuikyo Gorge, we recommend staying at Miyanoura.

The opposite is also true! If you trek to Shiratani Unsuikyo Gorge the next day and stay at a lodging in Anbo, you'll lose about 30 minutes each way...

That's right.

If you're trekking to Shiratani Unsuikyo Gorge, we recommend a stay at the Miyanoura lodging.

Note: The trailhead for Shiratani Unsuikyo Gorge is about a 25-minute drive along the mountain path from A-Co-op Miyanoura.

However, the Shiratani Unsuikyo trekking course doesn't require an early start compared to the Jomon Sugi climb, so you don't need to worry too much about travel time.

However, if you're leaving for the remote island early on the day, please keep this in mind. (;^ω^)

By the way, the A-Co-op Miyanoura branch is open from 9:00 AM, so if you have time, it might be worth stopping by.

It's the supermarket with the widest selection of products on Yakushima (^^)/.

In November 2025, DAISO (a 100 yen shop) opened as a tenant! They also serve freshly baked bread, so if you're lucky, you can buy some freshly baked bread.

Recommended Guesthouses, Cottages, and Hotels in Anbo

Yakushima Minshuku Suginoko ~For those who want to interact with others~

This guesthouse was renovated and reopened in April 2016.

And starting in 2020, a new owner will be running the inn, further upgrading it.

Based on the concepts of "interaction" and "sharing," it is operated as a long-term shared house for travelers to Yakushima.

To provide a more comfortable space, the shared spaces have been professionally renovated and remodeled to create a stylish atmosphere.

A distinctive feature of Minshuku Suginoko is its convenient location for accessing the Jomon Sugi trailhead, approximately a two-minute walk from the nearest bus stop, "Isobe."

All rooms are equipped with bathrooms and toilets, and there is a special shared space where you can enjoy private space while also interacting with other guests.

Also nearby is the popular restaurant "Isonokaori."

In October 2023, the guesthouse "Tumugu" (connecting people) opened! (^o^)

Owner Chie, a travel enthusiast, has visited many countries and enjoyed and cherished the connections she made with local people she met for the first time. Those connections continue to this day.
When her child entered university, she traveled alone to Yakushima to fulfill her long-cherished dream of opening a guesthouse.
She says she's made it this far with the help of her family, relatives living in southern Yakushima, and neighbors (laughs).

Renovating a house built over 20 years ago, Chie's carefully crafted interior creates a warm and relaxing space. The sofa on the balcony is especially comfortable, perfect for breakfast or a workcation; you'll find yourself lingering there for hours (^^).
The bedrooms are separated by gender, and various thoughtful touches have been put into making solo female travelers feel at ease.

The house is located in the heart of Miyanoura, so restaurants are within walking distance, which is a plus.

However, even if you plan to rent a car after arriving in Yakushima during peak season, it can be hard to find one available (lol).

Useful Information About Rental Cars on Yakushima Island

Pickup, and Drop-off Information on Yakushima, a Island with Three Entrances

First, it's important to remember that Yakushima has three entrances. : Miyanoura Port (high-speed boats and ferries), Anbo Port (high-speed boats), and Yakushima Airport (airplanes).

If you're flying to and from the airport, we recommend choosing a rental car company near the airport. However, since The high-speed ferry departs and arrives at different ports depending on the time, you may end up arriving at Miyanoura Port and returning at Anbo Port.
Furthermore, depending on the weather, high waves may prevent the boat from departing, and you may have to return by plane instead of your original plan. Knowing that "this can happen" will help you act calmly in an emergency (^^)/.

As a result, many rental car companies have introduced systems for pick-up and drop-off at ports and airports.

*Depending on the company or office, additional fees may apply depending on the location and time (outside business hours, etc.), and pick-up, delivery, and drop-off services may not be able. Therefore, we recommend that you always confirm details online, by email, or by phone after making a reservation.

If this is your first time experiencing this system, you might be a little surprised.
(I was surprised when I learned about this system the first time I came to Yakushima. ^^;)

Advance reservations are recommended! Yakushima has fewer rental cars than you might think.

When I went to Okinawa some time ago, I thought, ""Unlike Yakushima, Okinawa is a big island, so I can rent a car once I get there."" I tried to book the day before, but all the companies listed online were fully booked, so I had to quickly change my travel plans. (lol)

Apparently, having a large number of cars means high maintenance costs, so they only bring cars from off the island during busy periods like long holidays, Golden Week, and Obon!

Wait!? I had no idea there was such a situation...
In fact, some companies on Yakushima also reduced the number of vehicles due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. While the number of vehicles has increased slightly recently, another problem has arisen. Due to a labor shortage on Yakushima, there aren't enough people to dispatch and wash vehicles, so sometimes they can only prepare this many vehicles (^_^;). Yakushima's population is also decreasing year by year, so...

Advantages of renting a car on Yakushima

There are many benefits to renting a car.
1, you can plan your trip at your own pace without worrying about time.
2, you can travel early in the morning, at night, or when there are no buses.
3, the only public transportation around the island is the local bus. (And even then, it only runs once an hour, maybe...)
4, if you only join a morning (half-day) tour, you can enjoy sightseeing and driving in the afternoon.
5, you can sightsee while carrying large luggage such as backpacks and suitcases.
6, it's cheaper to travel with two or three people than alone.

These are just a few of the benefits I can think of.

Points to remember when actually renting a car

Do you prefer to borrow it all the time or only borrow it when you need to use it efficiently?

Many people come to Yakushima to trek to Jomon Sugi and Shiratani Unsuikyo Gorge.
However, Jomon Sugi takes a full day, so you might end up leaving your rental car behind, which would be a waste. In such cases, a tour with transportation is one option.

On the other hand, if you plan to visit Shiratani Unsuikyo Gorge, Yakusugi Land, or take a half-day kayaking or canyoning course in the morning, and then spend the afternoon sightseeing at your leisure, renting a bike during your stay is also convenient.

When driving a rental car on Yakushima, be careful of accidents and getting lost!

This may be true in any rural area, but if you're driving early in the morning or at night, it's surprisingly easy to get lost, as there are few streetlights outside of prefectural roads, many roads look similar, and signs are difficult to see.

Though things are gradually improving, there are still some areas where car navigation systems are not properly registered. Therefore, it's best not to rely too much on navigation and to check the map beforehand.

Also, in the south and west, deer sometimes jump out onto the road, so it's dangerous at night if you don't use highlights (you really do run into them ^^;).

I could go on and on about this, but even just researching the location of your accommodation and the places you want to go in advance can make a huge difference, so it's a good idea to check with people other than the driver as well.

Can't reserve a rental car? Don't give up! What to do if...

Some companies accept ""waitlists.""
Unfortunately, sometimes a trip can be canceled if someone suddenly develops a fever the day before the trip, or if a companion can't make it. (I've had clients like this too ^^;)

Another thing to consider is that rental car companies that aren't registered with online reservation sites like Jalan Rent-A-Car, Rakuten Rent-A-Car, and Tabirai Rent-A-Car may have spaces available. In fact, when my friend came to the island, he was able to rent a car this way! (However, there were times when he couldn't rent a car, so it's not guaranteed.)
