Hello everyone! This is Yakushima Guide Shima Asobi(^ω^)(meaning:Shima Asobi=Island Fun!).
When you come to Yakushima for work or travel, you might not have dinner or breakfast included, as with a room-only reservation. In such cases, you can eat dinner at a restaurant or izakaya, or buy it at the supermarket.
But do you know what times supermarkets and stores open and close?
There are no 24-hour convenience stores ( ;∀;).
Recently, closing times on Yakushima have been changing depending on the season, making things a little confusing.
Extending opening hours isn't a problem, but shortening opening hours can be a real problem.^^;.
So, we've put together a list of Yakushima's supermarkets, convenience stores, and drugstores, including their opening hours and special features!
We hope this will be helpful for your next visit to Yakushima (^∇^). (This information is current as of December 2025.)
Don't forget to put your eco bag in your travel bag or suitcase.
It's easy to forget (I often forget to bring one when I travel too).
Below, we've also introduced accommodations and rental cars on Yakushima, so please take a look if you're interested.

Be careful of closing times! If they close, you won't be able to buy anything on the island!
In cities, there are convenience stores that are open 24 hours a day, so you can go and buy something when you feel hungry, even in the middle of the night, right?
There are convenience stores on Yakushima, but please note that they are not open 24 hours.
(The island's convenience stores are more like shops.)
If you arrive on the last high-speed ferry or by plane, we recommend that you first secure food and drinks. (If your accommodation does not include dinner.)
This is because most shops on the island close between 8:00 PM and 9:00 PM.
(In winter, they may close at 7:00 PM.)
I've had guests tell me many times, "Yesterday, when I went out to buy some beer, the hostel staff told me, 'No stores are open anymore.'"
People on the island buy them the day before or before closing time, or give up (lol).
(They're used to it (^◇^;))
To prevent this from happening, we'll introduce you to the supermarket scene on Yakushima, starting from the northern part of the island!
Supermarkets in the Miyanoura area
Waiwai Land

A community-based supermarket that has been around since 2000.
It offers a wide variety of prepared meals, bento boxes, fresh produce, and frozen foods, as well as commercial ingredients and a variety of other items.
Lunchboxes, bread, sweets, alcohol, fresh produce, commercial frozen foods, and more.
I also use this store to buy bento boxes and frozen foods (^∇^).
Watts, a 100-yen store (all items are 110 yen, with some exceptions), is also located here.
However, the parking lot can get very crowded, so please be careful not to bump into anyone when you arrive.
Payment methods: Electronic money/OK, Credit card/OK, Cash/OK
Telephone number: 0997-42-2525

Life Center Yakuden

This supermarket is located about a 10-minute walk from Miyanoura Port.
As the name suggests, it's a comprehensive store that combines a home improvement store and a supermarket, with a wide selection of construction materials.
They often have products that aren't available at other stores, so I often stop by when I'm in Miyanoura.
They sell bento boxes, bread, sweets, alcohol, fresh produce, building materials, and more.
EDION, which sells electronics, is located in the back, so if you forget your phone charger, you can buy one here.
Payment methods: Electronic money/OK, Credit card/OK, Cash/OK

A-Coop Miyanoura

One of three A-Coop locations on Yakushima, A-Coop Miyanoura is the closest supermarket to Shiratani Unsuikyo (25 minutes by car). Its hours are 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM (November to March), so it's not perfect for early morning departures, but you can stop by on your way home.
They have a wide selection of bento boxes, side dishes, sweets, fresh produce, alcohol, souvenirs, and more.
They also sell Yakushima's specialty sashimi in single-serving portions. (Please note that some items may not be in stock depending on the season.)
They also bake fresh bread in-house, so if you're lucky, you might even be able to buy some freshly baked bread! Locals often visit when it's freshly baked. ( *`ω´)
And, a 100-yen shop called DASO (all items are 110 yen, with some exceptions) opened in November 2025 (o^^o)☆!
I personally love Daiso, so I'm very grateful.
Payment Methods: Credit Cards/OK, Cash/OK, Electronic Money/OK

Supermarkets and drugstores in the airport area
For some reason, Yakushima has three drugstores near the airport.
Ah, I wish there was one in the north and one in the south too ( ;∀;).
Also, if you suffer from motion sickness or are traveling with small children, motion sickness medicine is a must!
Even getting to Shiratani Unsuikyo and Yakusugi Land requires a 30-minute drive up a mountain road.
If you forget, don't worry, you can buy one at a drugstore or other store. ^ - ^.
Drug Eleven Yakushima Store

This Drug Eleven is part of the Tsuruha Group.
Since its renovation in the spring of 2025, it has been praised for its improved visibility.
The compact interior is not too large, making it convenient for finding what you're looking for.
Half of the store is dedicated to CanDo, a 100-yen shop (all items are 110 yen, with some exceptions), so you can stock up on any small travel essentials you forgot.
Medicine, groceries, snacks, beverages, cosmetics, diapers, and more are sold here.
Payment Methods: Electronic Money/OK, Credit Cards/OK, Cash/OK

Drug Store Mori Yakushima

I've been a regular at Drugstore Mori, commonly known as "Doramori," since I came to Yakushima.
For some reason, I find myself humming the "Doramori" song sung in the store♪...
It's open the latest on Yakushima. Hours are 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM!
In addition to pharmaceuticals, they also have a wide selection of baby products, sweets, bread, groceries, household goods, and alcohol.
The prepared food and bento section is small.
Best of all, they also carry bottled Mitake shochu, making it a great choice for those looking to buy shochu as a souvenir.

Drug Store Cosmos Yakushima

Drugstore Cosmos, commonly known as "Cosmos," is a relatively new store on Yakushima, having opened in 2021.
Payment is cash only, but the prices are accordingly cheaper. The parking lot is spacious, and the selection and speed of replenishment are unbeatable. They sell everything from medicines, groceries, household goods, stationery, and alcohol.
What's more, the variety and selection of sweets, frozen foods, and wine may be the best on Yakushima.
And it's less than a five-minute walk from the airport, so it's a great place to stock up on all the essentials you need for your trip.
Payment Method: Cash/OK

SOME'S Yakushima

Yakushima's reliable home improvement store, SOME'S Yakushima, commonly known as "SOME'S."
In 2020, the store moved to a new location on the mountainside, and the old location became a complex that includes the ramen specialty store "Ramen LABO Tabukawa" and a 24-hour laundromat.
(The SOME'S Yakushima store is located at the back of the complex, up the mountainside.)
Since it's a home improvement store, you can find almost anything.
Household goods, sandals, water toys, fresh food, frozen foods, alcohol, sweets, and more.
By the way, if you're looking to buy Mitake shochu, SOME'S is the cheapest place.
(Because it's so cheap, it sometimes sells out.)
Please note that closing time has changed to 7:00 PM.

Supermarkets and convenience stores in Anbo
A-Coop Anbo (Shopping Center Banchan)

When it comes to supermarkets in Anbo, it's A-Coop.
This used to be the site of Anbo Elementary School. It has now been relocated up a hill.
The exterior of the store says "Shopping Center Banchan," but inside it's "A-Coop Anbo Branch."
You can find fresh produce, bread, prepared foods, sweets, alcohol, and simple household items here, so it's a convenient place to stay if you're staying near Anbo.
There's also an ATM behind the cash register, next to the butcher shop, which is very convenient. (There are no ATMs on Yakushima except at banks and post offices. This is the only place ^_^.)
Payment Methods: Credit Cards/OK, Cash/OK, Electronic Money/OK

shiiba (Shiiba) - Bakery & Convenience Store -

Shiiba, located in Harumaki Ward, next to Anbo, is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.
Everything is delicious: freshly baked bread, side dishes, bento boxes, and cakes.
*Bread and cakes are not available on Tuesdays.
And this is the only place on Yakushima where you can eat tangerine soft serve ice cream.
(My kids love it too ^_^)
As the name suggests, this convenience store sells drinks, snacks, and small items.
Credit cards are not accepted, but cash and PayPay are.
There's also an outdoor dining area under the roof, making it a great place to stop by for a break during your drive (^ω^).
Payment Methods: Cash/OK, PayPay/OK
Phone Number: 0997-46-2002
Supermarkets in the Onoaida area
As you head south, the number of stores decreases, so be careful not to forget to buy anything!
A-Coop Onoaida
The last of Yakushima's three A-Coops, the A-Coop Onoaida, is located near Onoaida Hot Springs.
It's the only supermarket in the southern part of the island.
With a wide variety of bento boxes and side dishes, this is a great option for those staying at nearby guesthouses or hotels!
Lunch bento boxes and side dishes are available around 10:30, and dinner bento boxes and side dishes are available around 4:00 PM.
And, The sushi here always looks delicious.
Of course, you can also buy fresh produce, bread, prepared foods, sweets, alcohol, and small household items.

S Mart (Yamashita Shop)

SMART, a convenience store in western Yakushima, commonly known as "Yamashita Shop."
It's located a little ways off the prefectural road, so it's recommended to use Google Maps or similar to get there.
The road is narrow in places, so please proceed slowly.
Their bento boxes and side dishes are delicious!
I also rely on them when I drive around the island or when I visit the west side.
However, the selection is limited if you go in the afternoon, so if you're looking to buy a bento or side dish, be sure to come early.
And they close in the evening!
Payment Methods: Cash/OK, PayPay/OK

What you can do in advance!
Check if the accommodation you're staying at sells food, snacks, and drinks!
First, check whether your lodgings sell food, snacks, and drinks.
You might accidentally buy dinner, but forget to buy snacks for the next day's hike!
This can happen. .
Some lodgings sell a small amount.
Buy it and bring it with you before you arrive in Yakushima
This is quite important. If you have the space in your luggage, prepare and bring it with you before coming to Yakushima!
You may have some items that you like, and without a rental car, it's difficult to go shopping right away (^_^;).
The store is closed! In that case, go to the food vending machine!
Traveling is always hectic, and things don't always go as planned.
I enjoy the hectic pace of travel, and that's part of the fun, but...
Amazingly, food vending machines have recently appeared on Yakushima.
They're available 24 hours a day, so be sure to rely on them in case of emergency.
Some vending machines have a wide variety of drinks.
However, there are only a few machines and they are scattered around, so be careful as some places are inaccessible without a rental car, especially at night or early in the morning.
Tourist Center Entrance ~ Miyanoura ~
This vending machine, newly installed in 2025, offers Yakushima souvenirs, daily necessities, and canned food. It's also within walking distance from Miyanoura Port, so it might be handy to remember the address in case of an emergency. ^ - ^.
Yakushima soy sauce, canned oden, canned risotto, bandages, batteries, insect repellent spray, and more.

mori cafe STAND - Koseda (near the airport)-

The mori cafe STAND vending machine is located across from SOME'S and Drugstore Mori near the airport.
(Coming in 2022!)
This vending machine, coordinated with the wall of mori cafe, is located right next to the store.
Four or five different sweets are stocked daily, twice a day, in the morning and evening. The selection changes with the seasons, and sweets unique to Yakushima are on sale.

When the weather is bad and the boats and planes can't come, you're helpless!
It's not often that the fresh food section of a supermarket is empty, but it does happen.
When there's a storm or a typhoon and the boat doesn't arrive for four days, it really is empty.
Still, the islanders have gotten used to it, and they get by by eating instant ramen and whatever else is stashed away in the freezer. (^◇^;)
If a storm hits while you're on the island, rather than worrying about food, make sure you have transportation to get home safely and get to work on time. In an emergency, it might be a good idea to be flexible and decide to leave the island earlier than planned.
If you have the time, please enjoy the storm on Yakushima (^ ^).
Summary
Now, our local guide has compiled a list of Yakushima's supermarkets, convenience stores, and drugstores, detailing their opening hours and special features!
In addition to these, there are shops and other establishments in each area, so it's fun to visit them.
(Surprisingly, these shops often open earlier in the morning.)
However, many places are difficult to get to without a rental car. ^^;.
I hope you enjoy Yakushima, including all of its good points, its inconvenient places, its abundant nature, and its poor transportation. ( ^ω^ )
